Shane Gersich signed an entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals on March 23, 2018, leaving the University of North Dakota after his junior year.
In a whirlwind three months, the rookie forward played in his first NHL game, tallied his first NHL point, and suited up in two NHL playoff games as the Capitals went on to capture their franchise’s first ever Stanley Cup.
After the Championship Parade was done and the celebrating in DC ended, Gersich returned back to UND area where he was greeted with a problem. His truck, not operated in nearly 90 days, would not start.
That’s when UND Police came to the rescue.

The UND Police jump-started Gersich’s truck. On Twitter, the organization’s account tweeted a photo with his arms around the cops, saying “glad we could help our old friend.” Gerich cheeses for the camera.

Tuesday afternoon, Gersich published a sentimental message on Twitter, thanking everyone for his experience at UND.
Tough time packing up everything from Grand Forks today. Coming here was the best decision and three years of my life. Thank you for everything. #SiouxForever

Leaving Grand Forks might be bittwersweet, but there are bigger and more memorable moments for Shane to come in Washington, DC.
