The NHL announced that Alex Ovechkin has been awarded the 2013 Hart Trophy, given each year to the player deemed most valuable to his team. It is the third Hart Trophy of Ovechkin’s career (he won in 2008 and 2009) and his first NHL award overall since 2009. He received 50 first place votes from members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, beating out Sidney Crosby (46) and John Tavares (38). Alex Ovechkin led the league in goals in 2013 (32 in 48 games) and vaulted the Washington Capitals from last place in the Eastern Conference to the playoffs, the team’s fifth consecutive postseason appearance. Ovi was also up for the Ted Lindsay Award, essentially the MVP as voted on by fellow players, but was passed over for Crosby.
