What comes around goes around. A few days after he pranked Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Justin Peters during an interview, Alex Semin was on the receiving end of some hockey mischief.
During overtime of Friday’s Canes-Ducks game, Ducks star Corey Perry broke his stick. On his way to the bench, the former Hart Trophy winner must have thought getting a new stick was too much work. Instead, he plucked a twig out of Semin’s hands as the ex-Cap sat on the boards waiting for a shift change.
Semin threw his hands up in Sashalian disbelief.
Okay, I’m laughing.
Even harder now. He’s so mad.
I don’t know how to wrap this up. This is ridiculous. I’ve never seen anything like this. Is this even a penalty? Let me check the NHL’s rule book.
10.3 Broken Stick – Player – A broken stick is one which, in the opinion of the Referee, is unfit for normal play.
A player without a stick may participate in the game. A player whose stick is broken may participate in the game provided he drops the broken stick. A minor penalty shall be imposed for an infraction of this rule.
A player who has lost or broken his stick may only receive a stick at his own players’ bench or be handed one from a teammate on the ice. A player will be penalized if he throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to teammate on the ice. A player may not participate in the play using a goalkeeper’s stick. A minor penalty shall be imposed for an infraction of this rule.
Okay, yes. It is a penalty. And Perry got away with it!
And Semin just sits there– in his own world— again. The Canes get confused… then angry! Carolina won the game 3-2 in the shootout. Our friend Jamie Kellner has great photos of the whole affair.
