John Walton’s legendary call of Evgeny Kuznetsov’s series-clinching goal

With NBC’s national crew taking over all broadcasts in the second round, John Walton, the radio voice of the Capitals, was the only local announcer to do play-by-play of the Capitals series-clinching win against the Penguins.

His call of Evgeny Kuznetsov OTGWG was epic. You need to give it a listen.

“On the wing to Crosby. A poke-check away and now the counter,” Walton began. “Here comes the Caps. Kuznetsov gets loose. Evgeny coming down the middle. A shot… and it comes over!”

And then began the screaming.

“HE SCORESSSSSS! HE SCORESSSSS! EVGENY KUZNETSOV WINS IT FOR WASHINGTON! IT’S OFF TO THE THIRD ROUND! THE DEMONS HAVE BEEN EXORCISED! GOOD MORNING! GOOD AFTERNOON! AND GOOD NIGHT PITTSBURGH! WE’RE GOING TO TAMPA BAY! THE CAPITALS HAVE DONE IT!”

Walton later added, “All of the heartache. All of the demons. The two-time defending champions are going home, and the Capitals are moving on for the first time in 20 years to the Eastern Conference finals. Oh baby, what a moment here in Pittsburgh.”

What a call.
