The Seattle Kraken announced a scary update on injured forward Jacob Melanson on Saturday.
The club shared that Melanson would be “out indefinitely” after suffering an injury now diagnosed as an “anterior mediastinum hematoma with vascular pseudo aneurysm.”
The Kraken’s full statement reads:
During Seattle’s opening game on October 1 at Calgary, Jacob Melanson suffered an upper-body injury that was later diagnosed as an anterior mediastinum hematoma with vascular pseudo aneurysm. The organization would like to thank the medical teams in Alberta for their assistance in Jacob’s care.
Given his unique injury, Jacob will continue to be evaluated and monitored closely by the medical staff in Seattle through the healing process for a gradual progression to return to hockey.
According to Dr. Harjas Grewal, a physician who frequently assesses injuries suffered in the NHL, Melanson essentially has a collection of blood in the front of his chest, presumably caused by some sort of trauma. The exact instance of trauma was not evident during the game.
Melanson played 9:31 of ice time against the Flames and fired one shot on goal before leaving the contest. Last season, the 23-year-old forward recorded five points (2g, 3a) and 32 penalty minutes in 36 games for Seattle.
The Kraken originally listed Melanson as out “week-to-week” when they placed him on injured reserve last week.
Seattle is currently on the road in Washington, DC, where they will play the Capitals at Capital One Arena on Sunday evening. They are 3-2 to start the season, beating the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 in their last game on Friday.
