Game preview
Now that the NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, the Washington Capitals are back to reality — a season teetering on irrelevancy and likely to end much earlier than hoped.
Saturday afternoon, the Capitals will play their first game — a tilt at TD Garden against the Boston Bruins — since they traded veterans John Carlson and Nic Dowd for future assets. The team will be without their replacements who they added: David Kampf and Timothy Liljegren.
With 19 games remaining, the Capitals have only two routes to the playoffs: through the final wild card spot in the East where they trail the current occupant and today’s opponent, the Bruins, by four points, and third place in the Metropolitan Division, where the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins have a six-point edge.
As for the Capitals, they’ve received only one message from head coach Spencer Carbery.
“Keep fighting,” Alex Ovechkin said. “We’re still there. We’re still able to win games and make the playoffs. So, we just have to fight and play the game.”
Saturday will be a major test as the Bruins have won 11 consecutive home games. They’ve dominated at TD Garden since a loss to the Montreal Canadiens on December 23, 2025.
