Alex Ovechkin’s 918th career goal was a big one for the Washington Capitals.
With 53 seconds remaining in regulation and Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley pulled for an extra attacker, Ovechkin scored on the Flames’ empty net from 109 feet away, sealing the game.
The Capitals would hold on to win 3-1, ending their four-game losing streak.
Not only did Ovechkin extend his overall goals record on the play, but he also did so with his empty-net crown. The tally marked Ovechkin’s 70th career empty-netter, the most of all time.
On the night, Ovechkin had six shots and one hit in 17:49 of ice time.
His goal was the 1,667th point of his career.
