Alex Ovechkin had an extra-toothless grin when the Capitals practiced on Sunday, but he wasn’t the only one.
Ovechkin’s son, Sergei, joined him for a skate at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, and the seven-year-old got some dental work of his own. While still at the rink, Ovechkin helped pull out one of Sergei’s loose baby teeth, cheered on by a chorus of enthusiastic teammates.
The pair later took a proud photo of the matching gaps in their smiles.
John Carlson made sure to video the whole affair, which Nastya Ovechkina posted to Instagram.
Several other Capitals players, including Jakob Chychrun, helped distract Sergei while Ovechkin worked, then served as hype men once the tooth came out.
“Yeah, that’s it!” Sergei declared to a raucous round of applause.
The elder Ovechkin has gone without a front tooth since 2007, but his gap widened when he chipped another incisor against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. On Monday, the Capitals are set to host a giveaway of Ovechkin floss holders, with the floss coming out of the hole where his front tooth once was.
Sergei has long had the nickname of “Ovi Jr,” but now the resemblance is even more uncanny.
