The Washington Capitals are back home after a wildly unfortunate two-game road trip in which they lit the lamp just once and were outscored by their opponents, 10-1.

Tonight, they face the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are out of their “Spinny Backhand Pass” Era but are lost as ever under Craig Berube. Toronto currently sits four points out of the playoff spot in the East, but has been playing better of late, going 6-2-2 in their last 10.

On the Capitals’ end, Bogdan Trineyev will play his second career NHL game while Logan Thompson will get the start in net. He’ll oppose Leafs netminder Dennis Hildeby at the other end.

Puck drop for today’s game is scheduled for a little after 7:00 pm. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin will have the call on Monumental Sports Network. It’s Caps Canine Night at Capital One Arena.

Tunnel shenanigans

1st Period

Puck is dropped. Ovechkin-Strome-Beauvillier and Chychrun-Roy get the start.

Aliaksei Protas to the box for high-sticking Morgan Rielly 45 seconds into the game. Leafs get the first power play of the game.

Caps kill the power play.

Laughton misses a layup on the doorstep.

Sonny Milano, coming off the bench, steals the puck at the blue line, dances through all of Toronto’s defense, and hits the post with his shot. Great play except the finish, which is the story of the Capitals lately. Milano did draw a power play as Scott Laughton gets whistled for slashing at 4:04.

Alex Ovechkin rips a huge one-timer off the short-side post from the left circle. Got a feed from Justin Sourdif at the top of the zone.

Bobby McMann high-sticks John Carlson on a follow-through of a dump-in, which is not a penalty, but he’s in the box anyway at 6:23. Craig Berube was not happy. Caps to their second consecutive power play.

Another penalty. Martin Fehervary to the box for hauling William Nylander down at the 9:22 mark. Tonight is just power play practice thus far.

Semi-breakaway for Fehervary when he comes out of the box, but his shot is stopped by Hildeby.

Quiet crowd tonight, it’s like a Tuesday in November crowd.

Sourdif sends a pass through the crease to Protas, and the Belarusian bangs the puck home.

🚨

1-0 Washington Capitals

Goal: Aliaksei Protas (11). Assists: J. Sourdif (5), J. Carlson (19). Time: 13:53

McMichael’s shot gets deflected by Frank off the backboards, which bounces right in front of the net to Chychrun for the layup.

🚨

2-0 Washington Capitals

Goal: Jakob Chychrun (13). Assists: E. Frank (7), C. McMichael (13). Time: 16:16

That’s two goals 2:23 apart.

Rasmus Sandin off for hooking at 17:44.

Capitals kill the Leafs power play.

At intermission: The Capitals lead 2-0. The Capitals lead in shots on goal 8 to 4.

2nd Period

Puck is dropped.

This game has now entered chess match territory, which [snores].

Ovechkin rams one off the post again. That’s two posts struck tonight for The Great 8.

Dylan Strome to the box for slashing at 11:42.

Capitals kill the penalty. They’ve killed 25 of the last 28 power plays they’ve seen.

We got a dust-up in front of the Leafs’ net after OEL tackles Protas behind the net. Then he comes over and cross-checks the living bejesus out of Pro. Good lord. Should have been a double minor, only a minor for the initial hold though. Caps get another power play at 16:19.

At intermission: The Capitals still lead 2-0. The Capitals are outshooting the Leafs 20 to 12.

3rd Period

Puck is dropped.

Chychrun hits the “sign of the cross” after scoring.

🚨

3-0 Washington Capitals

Goal: Jakob Chychrun (14). Assists: J. Carlson (20), N. Dowd (5). Time: 4:02

OEL dives, but it’s enough to send Pro to the box for hooking at 4:22.

Beauvillier blocks a big shot on the PP.

Caps kill the penalty.

🚨

4-0 Washington Capitals

Goal: John Carlson (14). Assists: J. Sourdif (6), T. Wilson (16). Time: 8:57

Chychrun skates the entire length of the ice and hits the post. Where is the Leafs defense> lmao

Caps win 4-0!

Bouncing back in a beautiful way: Capitals beat Maple Leafs 4-0
