The PWHL is coming to the District for the first time this January.
Monday, the league announced that the Montreal Victoire will take on the New York Sirens at Capital One Arena on Sunday, January 18, 2026, as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour, which features 16 stops across 11 cities. Puck drop for the game will be at 2 pm.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the PWHL Takeover Tour to Capital One Arena and to celebrate the incredible momentum behind women’s hockey,” Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said in a statement. “This event is an exciting chance for fans in our region to experience world-class women’s hockey talent, and a reflection of our ongoing commitment to supporting women’s sports at every level. The energy surrounding the PWHL is undeniable, and we’re proud to play a role in helping that movement reach new audiences.”
Players set to compete in DC include Montreal’s Marie-Philip Poulin, a three-time Olympic gold medalist (2010, 2014, 2022) who scored the medal-winning goal in each victory, and reigning PWHL rookie of the year Sarah Fillier, who won gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics before beginning her pro career in New York last season. The game will come just over two weeks before the start of the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan.
In addition to the stop in Washington, PWHL will visit six other new cities during the tour, including Calgary, Chicago, Dallas, Halifax, Hamilton, and Winnipeg, while returning to Denver, Detroit, Edmonton and Québec City. Per the league, last season’s tour drew over 123,000 fans.
“Season Two’s PWHL Takeover Tour was the first of its kind, giving fans across North America the chance to experience the excitement of a regular-season game in their home venues,” Amy Scheer, the PHWL’s executive vice president of business operations said. “The passion and support from fans, and the enthusiasm from cities eager to engage with our league, have fueled our ambition to grow the Tour for Season Three.”
Pro women’s hockey last came to the DC area in 2023, when the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (a PWHL precursor) played four games at MedStar Capitals Iceplex as part of its Dream Gap Tour.
