Sometimes, even the most professional people are humbled by the greatness of Alex Ovechkin.
Wednesday, Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis was in the house for Ovechkin’s latest incredible milestone. Ovi became the first player in NHL history to score 900 goals, sending a backhanded shot past Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington.
“A number only Alex Ovechkin could make feel inevitable,” Leonsis wrote on X, posting a photo from his location at Capital One Arena.
The Monumental Sports & Entertainment chairman also ambled down to the team’s newly renovated locker room after the game, where he was present for Ovechkin’s beer bath. When Ovechkin made it to his locker, he hugged Leonsis.
“You ever score a goal like that,” Leonsis asked. “Backhand on the side?”
“Yeah,” Ovechkin said before adding, “actually in practice on LT.”
Leonsis revealed in an X post on Thursday that the two also posed together for a photo. He also shared that he had a special request for his superstar player.
“900 goals,” Leonsis wrote. “I have seen every single one and can’t remember another like that, a blind spinning backhand. I was an unabashed fan last night and asked Alex to sign my hat. Thank you, @ovi8.”
The photo showed Leonsis’s red number 8 hat, with Ovechkin’s autograph scribbled on the bill, proudly sitting on his leg.
What Ovechkin is accomplishing may never be seen again. It’s great to see Ted appreciating the moment.
