Andrew Cristall scored the decisive goal in the Washington Capitals’ 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center, Sunday.
Cristall scored in the fifth round of the shootout, beating Jacob Markstrom on his backhand.
Cristall’s tally in sudden death came after the Capitals and Devils tied 2-2 through three rounds. Pierre-Luc Dubois and Ryan Leonard scored on their shootout attempts while the Devils’ Jack Hughes and Arseny Gritsyuk found paydirt for the Devils. In extras, Timo Meier, Aliaksei Protas, and Nico Hischier were unsuccessful, setting up Cristall’s heroics.
Cristall, who is competition for one of the Capitals’ open roster spots at forward, got praise from Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery after scoring the Caps’ first goal of the game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
The power-play goal marked Cristall’s first of the 2025 preseason and his third in six preseason games for the Capitals since last year.
