The Washington Capitals’ current home jerseys may have run their course — at least with national hockey fans.
In a poll conducted by the popular social media personality @jfreshhockey, the Capitals’ home jersey was ranked worst in the league by 903 voters. The Capitals got a 3.7 out of 10 rating, finishing last for the second consecutive year.
The Capitals have worn the red home jerseys since the 2007-08 season — a span of 18 years — when Capitals owner Ted Leonsis did a full rebrand, opting to reunite the team with its vintage patriotic red, white, and blue colors.
The crest sports the team’s nickname, Capitals, in all lowercase letters with the t stylized as a hockey stick. The Weagle logo — an eagle shaped as a W with the Capitol Dome showing in the subtractive space under the wings — adorns both shoulders. The primary logo closely resembles the Capitals’ original logo design in 1974.
The Montreal Canadiens’ home jersey (8.0) ultimately finished atop the poll followed by the Calgary Flames (7.5), Buffalo Sabres (7.5), Detroit Red Wings (7.5), and Chicago Blackhawks (7.5). Notably, the Utah Mammoth ranked 17th (6.0) after choosing a nickname and changing from the Utah Hockey Club. See the full results.
While the Capitals’ current sweaters didn’t move the needle in this poll, the club’s Screaming Eagle design has been popular among players and fans — both locally and nationally. The Capitals have reportedly had discussions about putting the Screagle in their regular rotation, but as of this season, the team is continuing with its same home and away uniforms.
