The Washington Capitals routinely post photos of the team arriving at the arena ahead of games. The players, wearing full suits, serve looks to the camera and show off a more professional side.
But ahead of Game 1 against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Capitals shared a photo whose focus was not the players, and it became quite a stir on social media.
As Brandon Duhaime and Pierre-Luc Dubois entered the locker room, they were both staring directly at a spoon. Dubois holds the inanimate object and has a quizzical look on his face while Duhaime seems to be entranced by something. There must have been some secret, some knowhow, or maybe even some remnants of a great meal on that spoon.
So Wednesday morning, RMNB’s Katie Adler asked Duhaime what was going on in the photo. The rugged forward, however, would not give us the scoop (pun: intended).
“You and Dubois were walking in with a spoon?” Adler asked. “What was up with that?”
“I didn’t see that one,” Duhaime said. “I don’t know about that one. I didn’t see that.”
Comes off pretty defensive, Mr. Duhaime. Like there’s more to this story.
It’s worth pointing out, this is not the first time Duhaime has stymied us on important questions. Earlier in the season, we asked the fourth liner why the team was barking in the locker room.
“Yeah, I think we’re just keeping that one in-house,” Duhaime said at the time. “Yeah, we’ve got to keep it quiet, right?”
Later, we learned, Brandon actually, in fact, is considered to have that dawg in him.
As a serious journalistic enterprise, asking Dubois would be the next logical step. But with Game 2 just around the corner, we’re going to end the investigation here to make sure spoon-gate doesn’t become a distraction during the playoffs. And also because this story does not have much shelf life. (Unlike Tom Wilson’s lucky egg.)
We’ll just surmise they were hungry for goals. Case closed.
