Ryan Leonard scores in fourth straight game, pushes Boston College to 4-1 win over Vermont

Ryan Leonard got on the board for no. 1 ranked Boston College again, burning the Vermont Catamounts for a second straight night. Leonard had two points (1g, 1a) in BC’s 4-1 win, pushing his season total to 42 points (27g, 15a) in 31 games.

Leonard’s first contribution to the victory came 14:24 into the first period. After Gabe Perreault poked the puck behind Vermont’s net, Leonard got in on the forecheck, beat two defenders to the puck, and slid a pass to the high slot for Andre Gasseau to pound home the eventual game-winning marker.

Leonard potted his own goal 4:37 into the second frame, cutting behind Vermont’s defense on a rush chance. After receiving a deft pass from Perreault, the top Washington Capitals prospect went forehand to backhand for an easy finish past goaltender Axel Mangbo.

The goal was Leonard’s NCAA-leading 27th of the season and his 14th in his last 12 games. He recorded four total shots on goal in the win and took two minor penalties.

Leonard’s 58 career goals for the Eagles are the most of any under-20 skater in the NCAA since Mike Cammalleri scored 65 goals for the Michigan Wolverines from 1999-2002. However, Cammalleri, who would later have a 39-goal, 82-point season for the Calgary Flames in 2008-09, scored his goals over the course of three seasons in 38 more games than Leonard has played.

Leonard is on pace to score nine more goals this season if he plays in the same number of games for the Eagles as last year (41). He would then likely finish his college career with 67 goals, the second-most of any under-20 college player who played just two seasons, behind only John Mayasich (74). Mayasich’s two under-20 seasons came with the Minnesota Golden Gophers over 70 years ago (1951-1953).

Boston College will be back in action next against the New Hampshire Wildcats on February 28. Leonard had an assist against New Hampshire in BC’s 4-2 win over them earlier this month.
