Alex Ovechkin has once again etched himself into the NHL history books with another nuanced goals record.

Friday, the 39-year-old sniper scored his 879th career goal, beating goalie Ivan Fedotov for the first time with a one-timer at five-on-five. The tally not only put Ovechkin 16 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, but it also marked his fourth consecutive game with a goal.

Per NHL PR, this is the 34th career four-game goal streak of Ovechkin’s incredible career, tying Mario Lemieux for the most in NHL history. Wayne Gretzky is the only other player who has 30.

Ovechkin, as a rookie, started his career with four different four-game goal streaks in the 2005-06 season. His first such streak began on December 22, 2005 and stretched through January 1, 2006, lasting six games. His second (1/10/06 – 1/19/06) included The Goal on January 16, 2006.

His longest goal streak of his career came later that season, when he scored in seven consecutive games on his way to winning the Calder Trophy over Sidney Crosby.

Ovechkin’s current four-game streak is his second this season as a 39-year-old.

Technically, Ovi has notched 37 personal four-games-or-more consecutive goal streaks in his career but according to NHL Stats, an NHL goal streak is only recognized if a player scores in consecutive team games. Personal streaks include spans when a player missed time for injury or suspension and score in their first game back to keep their streak going.

Notably, Mario Lemieux was one of Ovi’s favorite players growing up.

“He’s one of my idols when I’m growing up,” Ovechkin said. “I get lucky. I have a time to play against him, was on the ice with him a couple times.”
