Not only did goaltender Logan Thompson steal another victory for the Washington Capitals in the team’s 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, but to little fanfare, he also assisted on the Caps’ game-winning goal.
“I don’t even remember what I did,” Thompson said bewildered to reporters after the game.
Thompson was credited the secondary assist on Pierre-Luc Dubois’s third-period strike that put the Capitals up 3-1 with 16:11 remaining in the game.
During a Caps power play, the Oilers’ cleared the puck down the ice and Thompson stopped the puck behind the net and left it for Dubois. After skating the puck up the ice, PLD found Lars Eller wide open who beat Oilers’ goaltender Stuart Skinner with his shot, but doinked his backhander off the far post. The puck then bounced to the French Canadian centerman who shot the rebound into the yawning net. Dubois’s tally, his ninth of the season, came shortly after the power play expired.
“I didn’t even know I got an assist,” Thompson said. “It’s cool, I guess. Yeah. Nice?”
The PLD lamp lighter was credited as the game winner after Corey Perry scored his much ballyhooed Nacho Goal to narrow the Caps lead to 3-2.
The assist marked Thompson’s first 5-on-5 point of his five-year NHL career, and the first point by a Capitals goaltender in the 2024-25 season. Overall, the apple was Thompson’s fourth point of his career — all coming during the last two NHL campaigns with the Caps and Vegas Golden Knights.
Thompson, who made 30 saves on the evening, only surrendered two goals on the evening despite the Oilers generating a gaudy 5.15 expected goals, per Natural Stat Trick.
Per reports on Thursday night, the Capitals are now trying to re-sign Thompson before the 4 Nations Face Off break in mid-February.
