The Washington Capitals accomplished something historic in their 2-1 overtime triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

The victory marked the Capitals’ tenth straight win on the road, making the 2024-25 Caps the twelfth team in NHL history to accomplish the feat in a single season. The 2005-06 Detroit Red Wings and the 2014-15 Minnesota Wild own the record with 12 straight road victories.

The Capitals’ road streak began with an 8-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on November 9 and remains active 33 days later. They’ve outscored their opponents a staggering 48-21 during the 10 games.

The Capitals initially broke the franchise record when they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on December 6 to earn their eighth road win in a row.

“Sometimes we’ve got to take a step back and recognize what this group is accomplishing,” Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery told his team after its latest road victory. “I know we’re just going to continue to push and we’ve got a long way to go, but to win 10 games in a row on the road in this f***ing league is an incredible accomplishment. And you guys should be so f***ing proud of that. Ten games in a row, to go in a different building: warriors. Now we take that ship back home to Buffalo.”

While the Capitals’ road streak marches on, one nuanced part of it ended. After needing an Aliaksei Protas overtime goal on Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves to seal their 2-1 victory, the team’s road winning streak in regulation came to a halt at nine. According to NHL PR, the Capitals are one of only three teams in league history to win nine consecutive road games all in regulation, joining the 1983-84 Buffalo Sabres (10 GP from Dec. 10, 1983 to Jan. 23, 1984) and the 2023-24 Los Angeles Kings (9 GP from Oct. 17 to Nov. 24, 2023).

There was one other bit of good news with the dub as well. The Capitals earned their 20th win of the season and matched their fewest games to reach the mark in its 50-year history (28 GP). Washington sits second overall in the NHL’s standings (42), trailing only the Winnipeg Jets (43) by one with three games in hand.

“It says everything about our team, how tight it is, how close it is,” Protas told Monumental Sports Network’s Al Koken postgame. “Everyone fighting for each other. We stay connected, stay together. Because we have less fans than they do on the road, for sure, but we’ve got to create our own energy out there and help ourselves. And that’s what we’re doing right now.”
