As you might have guessed, Spencer Carbery’s post-game speech to his players was exhilerating after the Washington Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights to capture their first regular season win at T-Mobile Arena.
Carbery gave shoutouts to Tom Wilson (shot block late in the game), Logan Thompson (big saves against former team), and Jakub Vrana (key goal) for their unheralded contributions to the team’s win. But it was Alex Ovechkin who got the biggest pop in the locker room.
Full transcript
Spencer Carbery: This organization has never won a regular season game in this building.
(Everyone laughs)
Spencer Carbery: Is it 7 years?
(Team yells ‘Hey!!!!’)
Spencer Carbery: Couple things to highlight, that block at the end by f***ing Willy.
(Cheering)
Spencer Carbery: LT 2-0 against the old team.
(Really loud cheering)
Spencer Carbery: All kidding aside, made some huge f***ing saves when we were on our heels a bit. Did a hell of a job, man. Good f***ing work today. That’s huge.
Spencer Carbery: This goal, I thought was a huge f***ing goal in the game. That third goal where Pro [passed to] the F3 shooter. Where’s V? That’s a hell of a f***ing goal.
(A player yells ‘Atta boy, V.’)
(Dramatic pause)
Spencer Carbery: How bout the f***ing hat trick from the big man!?!?
(Locker room goes bananas. Ovechkin is wearing all white spandex and begins pumping his fist.)
(Ovechkin and Carbery hug)
(Unidentified player yells ‘STILL GOT IT!’
Not only is this team winning, but it’s pulling for Ovechkin to accomplish something many thought in the past was an unbreakable record. This team is so close knit. No wonder they keep winning and outperforming expectations.
