Many Washington Capitals season-ticket holders got a surprise in the mail on Thursday. The team sent fans a special gift box commemorating their 50th anniversary season.

The Capitals-branded box features a 50th anniversary patch, puck, and plaque as well as a commemorative ticket from the team’s first ever NHL home game Capital Centre — a 1-1 tie against the Los Angeles Kings on October 15, 1974.

The box also features five different Capitals logo pins and a special printed message:

For five decades, the Washington Capitals hockey team has been an essential part of our area, our homes, and our community. Our history, deeply rooted in this region, is a testament to our enduring legacy.

We have celebrated 50 years of unforgettable moments characterized by determination, passion, and triumph. We proudly embody the spirit of “Rocking the Red” and “Unleashing the Fury,” and we will forever cherish the unforgettable 2018 Stanley Cup victory.

Whether you’ve been with us since 1974 or joined us along the way, let’s unite and cheer together in ALL CAPS!

This is 50 Years of Capitals Hockey.

“I was really happy to receive it as it holds such special meaning to honor the Caps 50th season and all the memories it holds,” Melissa Allen, part of a season-ticket holder account for the last 15 years, told RMNB. “As a season ticket holder and fan, I’m really happy and blessed to have experienced a lot of these amazing moments in Caps history, and I look forward to all the amazing memories to come.”

The box came on top of a renewal gift they received — a blue Capitals 50th Anniversary quarter zip.

“It was actually a total surprise to receive it,” Allen said. “Our tickets are digital, so it wasn’t anything to do with the tickets.”

The gift box comes after players personally delivered some season tickets to fans who had been with the team since the ’70s ahead of the team’s home opener last week.
