The Washington Capitals lost Game 1 of the regular season to the New Jersey Devils, but looked faster and more skilled than last year’s team. Now in Game 2, against the Vegas Golden Knights, they’ll try to capture their first victory with a slightly different lineup.
Matt Roy, who got injured on Saturday, is out “day-to-day,” but will miss a “decent amount of time” due to a lower-body injury. So in comes three-time Calder Cup champion defenseman Dylan McIlrath. Jakub Vrana will also get his first sweater of the season after the Capitals’ third line was atrocious against the Devils and benched by Spencer Carbery. Logan Thompson will get his first start as a Capital against his former team.
Vegas comes into the game leading the Pacific Division with a 3-0-0 record. They’ve outscored their opponents, 15-8. Their jaunt to Capital One Arena marks their first away game of the season.
Capitals-Golden Knights game can be watched on Monumental Sports Network. Puck drop is shortly after 7 pm. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin have the call.

1st Period
Puck is dropped.
🚨 1-0 Washington Capitals. WSH goal: Jakub Vrana (1). Assists: A. Mangiapane (1). Time: 06:02.
Mangiapane finds Vrana wide open in the slot and The Snek does not make a mistake. Vrana has a goal in his first game back as a Capital.
Dylan Strome dekes past a Golden Knights defenseman and goaltender Adin Hill, but his chip in gets knocked over the net.
🚨 1-1 tie. VGK PPG: Victor Olofsson (3). Assists: T. Hertl (2), M. Stone (5). Time: 17:49.
After a Martin Fehervary penalty, the Golden Knights tie it up on a great passing play where Olofsson fired into a partially empty net.
At intermission: The Capitals are outshooting the Golden Knights 8 to 7
2nd Period
Puck is dropped.
🚨 2-1 Washington Capitals. WSH PPG: Tom Wilson (2). Assists: D. Strome (2), A. Ovechkin (2). Time: 03:06.
Dylan Strome skates behind the net and finds Tom Wilson in front of the net. Adin Hill was looking the wrong way as Wilson blasted the puck home. He now has goals in consecutive games.
🚨 3-1 Washington Capitals. WSH goal: Aliaksei Protas (1). Assists: A. Ovechkin (3). Time: 05:16.
Alex Ovechkin just notched his 700th career assist.
🚨 4-1 Washington Capitals. WSH goal: Jakob Chychrun (1). Assists: N. Dowd (1). Time: 06:13.
That’s three goals in 3:07 for the Caps.
🚨 4-2 Washington Capitals. VGK goal: Jack Eichel (1). Assists: M. Stone (6), I. Barbashev (4). Time: 07:17.
Unbelievable passing play by the Knights gives Eichel a layup in front of the net, where he had enough time to gather the puck on his stick and fire it home unguarded.
At intermission: The Capitals are outshooting the Golden Knights 19 to 14 and out-attempting them 30 to 28 at 5v5.
3rd Period
