Already sporting a strong resemblance to Braden Holtby, new Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson looked the part. Now he has a freshly-painted bucket to show that he fully belongs.

Monday, the Capitals posted photos of Thompson’s new goalie mask from the team’s informal skates at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. The design features historical landmarks from around DC.

The side of Thompson’s new lid features the Capitol building while the backplate has the Abraham Lincoln statue from the Lincoln Memorial sitting atop the Weagle logo. Other details of the mask include Thompson’s LT logo on the chin, a detail shot of an eagle head on the side, and the NHL Unity Equality sticker on the back.

The helmet was painted by Dave Fried of Friedesigns as evidenced by the FD logo shield on the back plate. Fried wrote on Instagram, “LT gave me an open book for the design and we came up with a big bold eagle 🦅 in a slightly tattoo style holding the logo. And a few amazing monuments from the capital city!! All in a non symmetrical throwback looking design. So stoked on this one.”

He also posted a video while he created the bucket.

Fried also produced masks for Thompson and other Golden Knights goaltenders while he was in Las Vegas.

When Thompson first arrived to DC last week, he was still rocking his Golden Knights’ mask from last season.

The Capitals acquired Thompson in a trade with the Golden Knights during the second day of the 2024 NHL Draft, sending two third-round draft picks (one from 2024 and one from 2025) back in return. Thompson participated in an autograph signing at Vegas’s Sphere that day where the draft was located.

“It was an opportunity to get a good goalie with some upside,” then Capitals’ GM Brian MacLellan said after the trade. “We’re going to have to have four goalies. We only had three after the trade. We look at it as a potential guy that’s going to improve and we’ll see what happens in the future with him.

“It could be [a 1a/1b situation],” MacLellan said. “Charlie’s earned his spot here. Hopefully, we have a competitive situation in net and we’ll work it out from there.”

Thompson appeared in 46 games for Vegas last season, posting a 25-14-5 record with a 2.70 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage, and one shutout. Thompson has one year remaining on his contract with a cheap $766,667 cap hit.

The 27-year-old netminder played in the Capitals’ minor-league system with the South Carolina Stingrays during the 2019-20 season. He also participated in Capitals Development Camps in 2018 and 2019 where Aliaksei Protas was once his roommate.
