Two of the newest Washington Capitals jumped on the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex for an informal workout on Monday. Matt Roy, signed to a six-year contract in free agency, and Logan Thompson, acquired via trade, donned the team’s new Fanatics practice jerseys for the skate.
The two join John Carlson and Alex Alexeyev as the Capitals to get some work in before 2024 Training Camp gets underway in September.
Roy, 29, spent his previous six seasons in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings. During the 2023-24 campaign, he primarily skated on the team’s second pairing, notching 25 points (5g, 20a) in 81 games.
The two-way defender set a career-high in average ice time (20:59) last year and led the Kings in shorthanded ice time per game (2:51) and blocked shots (197). He also ranked second among LA’s blueliners in points, ice time per game, plus-minus (+21), and hits (152). His 197 blocked shots last season were the seventh most in the NHL last season, while his 230:48 of shorthanded ice time was the 14th-highest total in the league.
Thompson, 27, is no stranger to the ice at the Capitals’ practice facility as he’s a former participant at two of the team’s development camps (2018, 2019). He was also formally in the Capitals’ system with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays during the 2019-20 season.
The Alberta native appeared in 46 games for the Vegas Golden Knights last season, posting a 25-14-5 record with a 2.70 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage, and one shutout. Thompson has one year remaining on his contract at a $766,667 cap hit.
Thompson has prior familiarity with Washington’s goaltending coach, Scott Murray, who was also on the ice for the skate. Players can partake in on-ice sessions with a team-affiliated skills coach during the offseason after the NHL and the NHLPA agreed to new rules for offseason training last summer.
