Capitals acquire defenseman Jakob Chychrun from Senators in trade for Nick Jensen and draft pick

The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round draft pick.

Washington announced the deal just before noon struck on Monday.

The Capitals have held interest in Chychrun since the Arizona Coyotes shopped him at the 2023 trade deadline. In 82 games for the Senators last season, Chychrun recorded 41 points (14g, 27a).

“Jakob is a 26-year-old offensive defenseman who has nearly 500 games of NHL experience,” general manager Brian MacLellan said in a statement. “His unique skill set and experience will undoubtedly bolster our blueline, substantially increasing our offensive capabilities.”

Chychrun, a left-handed defenseman, has one year remaining on his current contract at a $4.6 million cap hit. Just over a year ago, Ottawa had to deal a conditional first-round pick, a conditional second-round pick, and an additional second-round pick to acquire Chychrun from the Coyotes.

Washington has made four significant additions to their roster via trade this summer. Chychurn is the first move MacLellan has made to address the team’s blueline after acquiring forwards Pierre-Luc Dubois and Andrew Mangiapane as well as goaltender Logan Thompson.

Jensen has two years remaining at a $4.05 million cap hit on the three-year extension he signed with the Capitals in February of 2023. Jensen recorded 14 points (1g, 13a) in 78 games for Washington last year.

The 33-year-old, right-handed rearguard skated on average the third most minutes per game (19:38) on the Capitals last season. He was a massive part of the team’s penalty kill, spending a team-leading 2:46 per game shorthanded.

The Capitals originally acquired Jensen and a fifth-round draft pick from the Detroit Red Wings in 2019 in a trade for Madison Bowey and a second-round draft pick.
