Alex Ovechkin and the rest of his Washington Capitals teammates traveled to Buffalo on Monday afternoon ahead of their matchup with the Sabres. And they didn’t fly lightly (well, in a figurative sense).

Ovechkin, who had shaved off his beard, was photographed clutching his foot-long sub from Subway and his latest obsession, a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos.

Saying photographed, though, doesn’t really capture the essence of what’s happening here. Seemingly very aware of the national headlines his new diet item made last week, the Capitals captain held his lunch up to his face and grinned, giving us the same layer of extra cheese that his Cheetos are providing him. How kind!

The Capitals posted an additional photo of Ovechkin with his meal on Facebook but while we get a thumbs up, there is less enthusiasm.

Ovechkin’s, uh, creative diet is one of the most incredible parts of his legendary story. The carbs and meats and cheese and pasta would send a normal human to the couch grimacing in pain, but not Ovi.

The Capitals captain recently became the first player in NHL history to record 19 consecutive 20-goal seasons from start of career and the oldest player in NHL history to score 8 or more goals in a 5-game span. He was also recently named the NHL’s First Star of the Week in March. At age 38, he’s playing some of the best hockey of his career — scoring on a 60-goal pace in the second half of the season — and is doing things that no other goal-scorer has ever done in the league’s history.

“I talk about nutrition with all age athletes,” Capitals chef Robert Wood said in the comments of an RMNB Facebook post, “and have to remind the younger players that there is only 1 Ovi!”

Well said, Robert!

And so, to summarize for the TL;DR crowd, Alex Ovechkin is feeling neato, because he has his bag of Cheetos.
