Live blog: Capitals start five-game road trip in Winnipeg

The Washington Capitals, 7-2-1 in their last 10, have played themselves back into playoff contention, but to get there, their superlative play must continue.

Tonight, the team starts a difficult five-game road trip that begins in Winnipeg.

The Capitals are already down a man — Tom Wilson is unable to play due to an upper-body injury he suffered on Saturday — but TJ Oshie will return to play his first game since February 22.

Tonight’s game is airing on Monumental Sports Network. Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin have the call. Puck drop will be a little after 7:30 pm.

Tunnel weirdness

1st Period

Charlie Lindgren will oppose Connor Hellebuyck in net. Pacioretty-McMichael-Oshie and TVR-Carlson get the start.

Four early whistles within the first two minutes of play.

Dylan DeMelo is hurt and down the Jets tunnel.

The Jets have eight of the first nine shots in the first six minutes of the game.

🚨 1-0 Jets. Neal Pionk gets lost in coverage and scores on a semi-breakaway down the right wing after blazing past Max Pacioretty. Time of goal 10:05.

Jets outshoot the Capitals 12 to 5 and dominated them in five-on-five shot attempts 31 to 13.

2nd Period

Puck is dropped.

🚨 2-0 Jets. Alex Iafallo with a tip-in in front of the net. Time of goal 8:16.

The Jets, let’s just say it, are really good. The Capitals are struggling to create any type of dangerous offense at all. They’re rarely getting the the homeplate area of the ice and when they do, their shots are getting blocked.

Ovi just got the puck put through his legs by Toffoli. Oh MY.

The Jets lead in shots 21 to 16 and are out-attempting the Capitals 47 to 31.

3rd Period

Puck is dropped.

Capitals to the game’s first power play. Colin Miller to the box for slashing Michael Sgarbossa at 6:33.

🚨 3-0 Jets. Kyle Connor, unguarded, scores on a tap-in in front of the net after a great bass by Mark Schiefele. Connor has 8 goals in his last 11 games. Time of goal 10:00.

Max Pacioretty and Neal Pionk both to the box for roughing. The Caps also get a too many men penalty at 17:15. Jets to their first power play.

Beck Malestyn blocks a shot on the Jets PP and he’s ailing a bit.

Caps get shutout 3-0. Not sure any team in the NHL would have beaten the Jets tonight.

Jets outshoot the Caps 29 to 23 and out-attempt them 63 to 48.
