The Washington Capitals lost their top young defenseman in Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Early in the first period, Martin Fehervary fell behind the Capitals net as he tried to retrieve a loose puck. Fehervary landed awkwardly on his left leg.

Once got up, the Slovakian rearguard did not put any weight on his injured leg as he gingerly made his way off the ice. The Capitals announced shortly after that Fehervary would not return to the game.

The Capitals will finish tonight’s matchup with only five defensemen.

Fehervary has spent most of the season skating with John Carlson on the first pairing, notching two goals and 12 points in 47 games this season. He previously missed five-games due to a different lower-body injury and one game due to an upper-body injury earlier in the season .

Update: Martin Fehervary was reportedly on crutches after the game.
