The Buffalo Sabres announced on Tuesday that they are returning to royal for the 2020-21 season.
The team debuted new jerseys and a slightly tweaked logo that is nearly identical to what the team wore from 1970 to 1996, according to SportsLogos.net.
The Sabres are trying to create excitement around the team after cleaning house in June and firing 22 different people (including their general manager, hockey operations staff, and coaches and GM of its AHL team).
The team’s stated goal with the new sweaters is to create βa timeless uniform system that respects team heritage and looks boldly towards the future as well.β
The new crest logo is modernized, featuring sharper edges and lines around the legs and hooves of the buffalo. The eye was re-made while the ear hole by the buffalo’s horn has been removed. “The crest has been slightly simplified from the original, with silver accents removed to create a sleek modern appeal,” the team added.

The new jerseys also include updated striping patterns that are yellow, white, and blue. “We wanted to pay tribute to the striping patterns of the past but also introduce some nuanced detail,” the Sabres wrote. “We layered some simple white piping on top of the gold stripes to accomplish this. In conjunction with Adidas, we also developed the white uniform shoulder striping.”
