Alex Ovechkin voted the greatest goalscorer in NHL history by fans

NBC Sports has been conducting a tournament bracket to decide who is the greatest goalscorer in NHL history.

NHL fans have spoken and they voted Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin first overall.

Ovechkin defeated Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, and one of his idols growing up, Mario Lemieux, to become NBC’s “King of Goals”. Seeding was decided by total goals.

Let’s go to Ovi live to see how he’s celebrating.

This season, Ovechkin became the eighth NHL player to ever score 700 career goals. Ovi has 706 total goals now, and is only 188 goals behind Wayne Gretzky (894) for the most goals all time. According to Hockey Reference, Ovechkin has the third most career goals adjusted by era. He’s only 34.
