The Washington Capitals were listless through the first two periods against the Buffalo Sabres, one of the NHL’s worst teams.
But like he has done many, many times before, Alex Ovechkin came to the rescue with one of the most amazing goals you’ll ever see.
Ovi’s 48th goal ended Linus Ullmark’s shutout bid and allowed him to keep pace with David Pastrnak who scored Saturday against the Lightning.

After a rare faceoff win by Evgeny Kuznetsov, Ovechkin skated laterally off the left wing, put the puck through the skates of Kyle Okposo and ripped an unstoppable wrist shot past Ullmark for the goal.
Craig Laughlin called it a “jockstrapper.”

The goal marked Ovechkin’s 706th of his career.
Ovechkin is now three goals shy of passing Mike Gartner (708) for the seventh most goals in NHL history.

Ovechkin has scored 359 career regular-season goals on the road (359 goals in 576 games), trailing only Wayne Gretzky (402) and Steve Yzerman (362).
