Brenden Dillon fights Ryan Hartman after Wild forward dangerously slashes Ilya Kovalchuk

Brenden Dillon got in his first career fight as a member of the Washington Capitals after Ilya Kovalchuk was incensed by a wicked slash by Ryan Hartman.

The new guy is sticking up for the new guy. I love it.

The whole melee started after Hartman took a whack at Kovalchuk’s right hand. Kovalchuk, furious, went after Hartman and threw several punches.

Eventually, Dillon and Hartman would break away from the pack to settle the score. It was an entertaining bout.

Hartman gave up at least four inches to the towering Dillon. To make up for the height disadvantage, Hartman dodged and weaved. He began the fight only throwing left hands before switching to his right. Both players landed several shots.

Officials gave Ilya Kovalchuk a double minor for roughing, Hartman a two-minute minor for slashing and five minutes for fighting. Dillon also got five for fighting. Alex Ovechkin served Kovalchuk’s extra minor.
