Auston Matthews fights Steven Stamkos in first bout in NHL history between 60-goal scorers, sparks Leafs to overtime win

Going into the 2023 postseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs had not won a playoff series in 17 years, the fifth-longest streak in NHL history. With his team down 3-2 in the final period of Game Three and facing a 2-1 series deficit, Leafs’ superstar Auston Matthews decided he wasn’t letting his team go down without a fight… literally.

Matthews, who scored his first goal of the playoffs in the first period, dropped his gloves for the first time in his career, taking on Steven Stamkos and exchanging punches with the 500-goal scorer.

It marked the first time in league history two 60-goal scorers have fought each other per Sportsnet Stats.

Tom Wilson wins game in overtime after grotesquely bloodying knuckles in fight with Nathan Beaulieu

Tom Wilson had his first signature Tom Moment of the 2022-23 season after leading the Washington Capitals to victory over the Anaheim Ducks late Wednesday.

A gritty Wilson had two-thirds of a Gordie Howe hat trick in the third period and then won the game in overtime for the Capitals after beating Trevor Zegras to the net. In the locker room, Wilson’s wounds from battle were on full display for everyone to see.

“It’s the Washington Capitals,” Wilson said. “We take a lot of pride in this organization. We want to be winners. We want to win games. Still a pretty good group in here.”

Tom Wilson tells Leafs to ‘fight your own [expletive] guy’ after collision with goaltender Jack Campbell

Tom Wilson got in some hot water with the Toronto Maple Leafs after a hustle play resulted in goaltender Jack Campbell being clipped in the head accidentally.

Campbell remained in the game and did not suffer an injury.

Jay Beagle public enemy number one after beating up Troy Terry, cross-checking Trevor Zegras after ‘Michigan’ goal

Jay Beagle started a beef that a game of Mario Kart may be unable to solve.

Friday, during the first period of the Coyotes game against the Anaheim Ducks, Trevor Zegras scored a goal via The Michigan, where he picked the puck up on his blade and flicked it into the net like he was playing lacrosse.

Tom Wilson nearly knocks out Brendan Smith in fight with two big uppercuts

Tom Wilson pummeled Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brendan Smith in a brutal fight late in the Caps’ blowout loss to the Canes.

In the two teams’ last game, Smith injured Nic Dowd, decked Tom Wilson with a counter hit, and sent Evgeny Kuznetsov hard into the boards.

Smith could be seen on replays yapping at Wilson from the Hurricanes bench, looking to fight the Capitals winger, after the two were separated by officials on a previous shift.

The two dropped the gloves minutes later in the third period. It did not look like a fun time for Big Boy Brendan.

Tom Wilson teases TJ Oshie for always fighting the toughest guys on other teams: ‘You got in there, man’

After a mostly un-fighty preseason, the Washington Capitals had all the fights against the Philadelphia Flyers in their preseason finale on Friday.

The chaos began late in the second period after Garrett Wilson (no relation to Tom Wilson) threw a hard, legal hit on defenseman Michal Kempny along the boards. The bodycheck immediately got the attention of TJ Oshie, who was concerned about Kempny’s well-being after suffering three severe left leg injuries over the last three years.

So the six-foot Osh dropped his gloves and threw hands with Wilson, a heavyweight forward apparently unconcerned that the mammoth 6-foot-3, 218-pound journeyman had fought 65 times throughout his 13-year junior, minor league, and NHL career.

The Capitals and Rangers had six fights and a line brawl to start the game. The teams had 100 PIMs combined in the first period.

In the hours leading up to Wednesday’s rematch between the Capitals and Rangers, the Rangers organization called Tom Wilson’s role in a line brawl on Monday “a horrific act of violence.” Rangers players said Wilson had no respect for the game or its players. And the team said the Department of Player Safety’s George Parros should be fired after choosing to fine, not suspend the Capitals forward. The Rangers essentially painted themselves into a corner, where there had to be retribution in Wednesday’s game.

And retribution there was.

The Rangers and Capitals opened the game with a line brawl. All six forwards on the ice fought. Before the game was five minutes old, the teams dropped the mitts six different times.

Zdeno Chara just beat up Matt Martin after the Islanders forward boarded Michael Raffl

Ultimate Capitals teammate Zdeno Chara just morphed into The Incredible Hulk to defend Michael Raffl after a very bad hit by Matt Martin.

Raffl, who had his back turned, was knocked headfirst into the boards by the Islanders forward and laid on the ice in pain.

A furious Chara dropped his gloves with Martin and in the words of Joe Beninati “rained rights” onto the veteran’s face.

Capitals score three first-period goals after Brenden Dillon fights Chris Wagner during opening faceoff

Brenden Dillon and Chris Wagner wasted no time taking their fists to each other’s face. Four seconds after the puck was dropped on the opening faceoff, the two players chucked their mitts onto the ice and engaged in a gentlemanly do-si-do.

Dillon won the fight, overpowering Wagner with a torrent of rights. The face-punching appeared to set the tone for the Capitals (if you ignore Evgeny Kuznetsov’s stick penalty 23 seconds after Dillon’s fight). The Capitals jumped out to a 3-0 lead after goals from TJ Oshie, Lars Eller, and Conor Sheary.
