Alex Ovechkin checks Nate Schmidt into the Vegas Golden Knights bench

The first period of Monday’s Caps-Knights game was not a good one for Washington, but at least we got this mondo check from Alex Ovechkin on his old teammate Nate Schmidt.

Ovechkin comes rushing up the boards, but Schmidt backs off. Ovechkin loops around and quickly deposits Schmidt into his own bench.

Vegas defender Jon Merrill helps Schmidt up with a look of concern on his face, but no worries: Schmidt was smiling on his very next shift.

The two shared a laugh later in the period.

So that was nice. Now maybe some good hockey?
