Nicklas Backstrom sent a pass to the point and John Carlson fired a quick shot on net. After a carom in front, Alex Ovechkin raised his arm as if he scored.
It was Ovechkin’s historic 699th career goal.

After a lengthy review by NHL officials, the goal was announced and awarded to John Carlson. It was Carlson’s 15th goal of the season, tying a career-high.
There was a collective groan from Capital One Arena when it was announced John Carlson scored instead of Alex Ovechkin.
