John Carlson hits 104.5 MPH on the radar gun in Hardest Shot Competition

John Carlson did not win the Hardest Shot Competition at the NHL’s All-Star Skills Competition but he came pretty dang close.

The Capitals defenseman, who won last year’s event with a 102.8 MPH shot, slapped the puck a career-high 104.5 MPH in his second attempt to briefly give him the lead in the event.

Carlson’s first shot went 102.4 MPH, tying him with the Canucks’ Elias Pettersson. Carlson’s second attempt went 2.1 MPH faster to put him on top.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber ultimately won the event with an insane 106.5 MPH clapper.

Weber’s shot was only 2.3 MPH off the all-time record of 108.8 MPH by Zdeno Chara in 2012.

The win was Weber’s third career championship in the event.

He’s had four of the top 10 hardest shots on record.

Both of Carlson’s shots went faster than Al MacInnis’s “attempt” of 100.4 MPH meaning the NHL’s Norris Trophy favorite raised $10k dollars for Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC.
