Detroit, Michigan was the scene of a battle between a Cup contender vs potential lottery winner. The former in the Washington Capitals were expected to take this win from the outset, and they ended up doing just that.
Robby Fabbri got us underway with a power-play slam dunk. TJ Oshie did exactly the same to kick the second frame off. Alex Ovechkin circled the cage and beat Jonathan Bernier short-side to give the Caps a lead. Tom Wilson’s tenth of the season extended said lead. and Luke Glendening only nine seconds later put a damper on that.
Ovechkin got an empty netter and then another for the hat trick.
Caps beat Red Wings 5-2!
- The Caps looked uninterested in playing defense in the first period for poor Ilya Samsonov who made a couple ten bellers. The worst offender being the first line, who were downright atrocious. Admittedly, they were only beaten on the scoreboard after a bogus tripping call on Dmitry Orlov.
- In my eyes, that wasn’t the only garbage call against the Caps in the first. The “kneeing” on Tom Wilson was a mix of some great acting and skates clipping. The onus of the entire play becoming anything illegal is on Hronek for trying to jump out of a clean, incoming hit.
- Outside of all of that nonsense, it sure felt like the Caps went into this game feeling like they had these two points in the bag already. They all count the same boys. Can’t take a night off against even the worst of the NHL.
- Much, much better effort in the second period. Samsonov was bored for most of the period and the Caps scored twice to grab a lead. That is what we expected from this team against the lowly Wings.

- This has been said more than a few times already this season, but man I love watching Brendan Leipisic skate. The Caps fourth line being restored with Garnet Hathaway returning from suspension has renewed my love for that trio. Play them more.
- Not the game for lovers of five-on-five hockey. Aka, me.
- I want Nicklas Backstrom back. Get healthy, Nicky.
- The Caps then fell asleep again in the third, but they won the game and Samsonov was great. Be better next game at even strength.

- Those garbage human children shamed Baby Yoda’s frog eating. Pedro Pascal should have let the Klatooninians murder them all. Too far? No, Baby Yoda is the most important being in the universe.
- Filip Hronek loves to fling himself into the air. Should have been called for embellishing twice.
- Three game goal scoring streak for Alex Ovechkin and now 20 on the season after the hat trick. That 20 has him second in the league in goal scoring to only David Pastrnak who is literally scoring on every fourth shot right now.

The Caps stay on the road, heading out to the west coast to take on a bunch of Californian foes. Enjoy that weather, fellas.
