Capitals recall Liam O’Brien as insurance with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nic Dowd nursing minor injuries

The Washington Capitals recalled Liam O’Brien from the Hershey Bears on Friday morning.

O’Brien is in Washington to possibly spell Nic Dowd or Evgeny Kuznetsov after the two centers were ruled ruled as day-to-day following injuries against the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday.

Dowd’s lower-body injury came at the end of the first period after an awkward fall on the ice. He did try to return briefly to the game during the second period, but after testing out his leg, he headed back to the locker room and was unable to continue.

Earlier in the first period, Evgeny Kuznetsov also suffered an awkward fall into the boards but was able to return and played the rest of the game.

On Thursday, Kuznetsov had a maintenance day and did not practice while Dowd missed practice completely. Of Dowd, Coach Reirden later told the Washington Post’s Samantha Pell “He wasn’t able to practice with us today, so that is a little discouraging. But at least it seemed like he was able to do a little bit before and after. So, again, I’ll get updated on the trainer on that.”

Friday, Dowd missed practice again, and he will not dress tonight when the Capitals host the Buffalo Sabres. Reirden said the team is planning on Kuznetsov playing.

Here were the lines for the morning skate.

O’Brien recently re-signed with the Capitals to a one-year, $700,000 contract. This season with the Hershey Bears, he has registered three goals in nine games and currently leads the Bears with 13 penalty minutes.
