Big Washington Nationals fan Alex Ovechkin was very excited after the Capitals’ morning skate to talk about his favorite baseball team. Tuesday night, the Nats swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, winning the National League pennant for the first time and advancing to the World Series.
Speaking to the media, Ovechkin said he was so happy for the Nationals and that, “They fight hard. I hope they going to win it all.”
When asked to make a prediction, Ovechkin said he believes the Nats would win in five games, a nod and a wink to the amount of games it took the Caps to dismiss the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.
One fun fact is that the Nationals have not lost a game — they’re 6-0 — since Ovi threw out the first pitch during Game Four of the NLDS.
“They have to bring me all the time. I’m a lucky charm,” Ovechkin said laughing.

What do you think of the Nationals going to the World Series?
Alex Ovechkin: “It’s great. Happy for team. For boys. For city. They fight hard. I hope they going to win it all. We’re going to cheer. We’re going to be with them and wish them luck.”
Predictions for the World Series?
Alex Ovechkin: “I don’t know. 4-2 or 4-1. Five games!?” [smiles]
They supported you a lot during your Stanley Cup run. Did you notice it?
Alex Ovechkin: “All teams in Washington area support us. We DC Family. We have to support each other. It doesn’t matter if it’s Nationals, Redskins, Wizards, or Mystics. We respect everybody and we respect each team. We’re cheering for them.”
People say the Capitals broke the curse for DC sports.
Alex Ovechkin: “I hope so. We’ll see in a couple weeks.”
They’ve won six straight games since you threw out the first pitch.
Alex Ovechkin: “Yeah. I put it on Instagram. They have to bring me all the time. I’m a lucky charm so we’ll see.”

Road trip on the World Series will probably prevent you from going to any games.
Alex Ovechkin: “Yeah. I just tell Kuzy, ‘It sucks we not be able to go to the game. But we’re going to watch on the TV for sure. We going to give our energy to the team and the boys and hope they going to do it.”
Did you go last night?
Alex Ovechkin: “No.”
Ovechkin’s comments came in the aftermath of a Ryan Zimmerman interview conducted postgame with Sportsnet. The first baseman revealed that he was friends with Ovechkin and the two have commiserated in the past about their individual teams’ struggles.
“You know, talking with Ovi a little bit and seeing what they went through, I was so happy for him (when he won a championship),” Zimmerman said on the field after the win. “We’ve become pretty good friends and a bunch of those other guys as well… Backstrom. It’s a great city to play in. These fans deserve it just as much as we do.”
At one point during the year, the Nationals were over 10 games under .500. Their season looked like it was a lost cause.
“We had no other choice. It was either that or basically throw the season away,” Zimmerman said. “I can’t reiterate it enough. What a special group of guys. Just unbelievable the way we fought all year. Came back from a terrible start. It’s hard to imagine right now.”
