Team puppy Captain steals hearts, kisses players in first-ever Caps game

In case you haven’t heard: THE WASHINGTON CAPITALS FINALLY HAVE A TEAM DOG! He’s a puppy, his name is Captain, he’s in training to be a service dog for veterans and first responders, and he is The Best Boy.

Captain Alex Ovechkin walked the red carpet with Captain in his arms before Saturday’s home opener. Here are highlights from Captain’s face-licking, DogRating, GIF-earning first night in the public eye.

He was ready to join the boys on the ice but wasn’t called into action.

Since he couldn’t play with the boys on the ice, he watched from the stands. Captain donned some headphones for commentary-providing and/or noise-canceling purposes.

(Or should we say…pup-oses? Yes, yes we should.)

Before the game, Captain had his first-ever red carpet interview.

He unsuccessfully tried to lick NBC Washington reporter Sherree Burruss and her microphone but eventually realized Alex Ovechkin was closer and more amenable to puppy smooches. Ovechkin and Burruss agreed that Captain was “very loving.”

It was a very long day for a very li’l puppy. Understandably, he decided to take a nap in Ovi’s arms.

He made some new friends and got some hugs from some of the Capitals’ partners.
