Garnet Hathaway scores first goal as a Capital and it was a beauty

Garnet Hathaway has scored his first goal as Washington Capital to put the Caps up 1-0 in first period. Hathaway’s goal came after a rare defensive miscue by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Late in a solid period by the Canes, goalie James Reimer sent the puck along the boards to new defender Joel Edmundson. Edmundson attempted a too-cute centering pass as Brendan Leipsic pressured him. The puck found its way to Hathaway, who needed just a couple touches to score.

Capital One Arena exploded for the first home goal of the 2019-20 season.

Hathaway was warmly received by Alex Ovechkin upon returning to the bench.

Leipsic’s assist is also his first point as a Capital. Hathaway scored 40 points in 175 games for Calgary before signing with Washington this summer.
