A year after getting his name etched on the Stanley Cup, the Capitals’ Vice President of Communications, Sergey Kocharov, has won the lottery, according to the Virginia Lottery website.
The Capitals PR guy recently claimed the $1 million Powerball prize and took a photo with the check. He won, according to the website, after making an impulse buy at the Harris Teeter on Kings Mill Lane.
Kocharov was buying groceries and “I saw the Powerball sign and said, ‘I may as well try it,’” he said.
“I was surprised,” Kocharov said, adding “I always hear about jackpot wins. It feels great!”
The Virginia Lottery says Kocharov’s winning numbers were 1-19-31-48-61. Only two other tickets matched the first five numbers.
Kocharov bought five tickets for the July 27 drawing using Easy Pick, letting a computer randomly select his numbers.
The Harris Teeter where the winning ticket was bought will also get a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.
