Alex Ovechkin is starring in a new commercial. This time, the Washington Capitals captain teams up with Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer to promote Papa John’s.
In the 30-second clip, the two superstars are asked by a Papa John’s marketer for new pizza specials.
The two athletes’ ideas are priceless.
“Guys, we need a great special to get people excited about Papa John’s,” the employee asks. “There’s nobody more creative than you two. So what do you got?”
“What if you get two pizzas… but they both gotta be different,” Scherzer says as the camera zooms in on his different-colored eyes.
Ovechkin interrupts. “That’s boring. What if you get pizza and there always one piece missing?”
Ovi then flashes his trademark gap-tooth smile.
“A missing piece?” Scherzer responds. “I mean, I think two pizzas is better than 7/8ths of a pizza.”
The shoot took place on April 29th with Max and March 9th with Alex. The commercials will start airing on TV this weekend. Both were shot in McLean, Virginia.
The Ovechkin Special is a large specialty or up to three-topping pizza plus a two-liter Pepsi product for $15.
Max’s pizza special, 31% off regular menu price pizzas, has a charitable component, where 10% of every order is donated by the local Papa John’s franchisees to the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. To date, the special has raised $37,500.
During the 2019-20 season, there will also be some additional Ovi spots that will start airing at the beginning of the year.
Ovechkin’s relationship with Papa John’s has spanned several years and has raised money for charity. From his childhood dream being a pizza delivery guy to causing property damage, all of Ovechkin’s commercials for the chain have been instant classics. He’s also done work for Papa John’s Russia, which included puck-juggling tomatoes.
