In early February 2018, $40 million of improvements were announced for Capital One Arena. This past summer, after the Capitals claimed their first ever Stanley Cup Championship, those renovations were completed. As part of the renovations, fans saw the completion of new seating, a revamped team store, and the 100 and 400 levels of the arena were given a facelift.
Thursday morning Monumental Sports and Entertainment announced that an additional $15 million in improvements will be made to the arena in the summer of 2019, following the completion of the Capitals’ and Wizards’ seasons.
The upgrades include a new scoreboard display, which will have “Eight distinct display areas, delivering not just video of the action but real-time stats, scores, and updates,” as well as new LED displays along the boards, and all the stadium lighting will be replaced with new LED lights.
“Investing in a technologically-integrated venue experience is paramount to our mission of creating monumental memories for our fans,” says David Touhey, President of Venues at MSE. “Upon completion of this second round of renovations and upgrades, Capital One Arena will feature the best LED displays available today, creating the best in-bowl and in-arena experience for sports and entertainment in America.”
The arena will also become home to a “SkyRing” LED display, which will wrap around the roofline of the arena bowl. Capital One Arena will be the first indoor stadium to utilize this technology. According to The Washington Post, this SkyRing will be reminiscent of the technology used at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The 200 level “Kettler Loft” concourse will be upgraded to match the work done last summer’s work on the 100 and 400 levels. The PWC Club will also see improvements made its seating.
New concessions will be added, including a grab & go market, a Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company-sponsored lounge on the 400 level, and a stand known as TLC (Tenders, Love & Chicken), described as “a premium chicken concept that features crispy, home-style chicken tenders, hand-tossed golden fries and a signature chicken sandwich complete with a wide variety of dipping sauces found at a self-serve sauce bar.”
