No Russian better: numbers for the morning after

On the return of the Beags to DC, the Caps were triumphant over his Vancouver Canucks team 3-2 and gained some needed ground in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division by doing so. Time to string some wins together, boys.

The Canucks out-shot the Caps 32 to 31, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 45 to 43.

  • TJ Oshie opened scoring for the Caps and he’s been doing a lot of that lately and “that” meaning scoring points. Oshbabe has 14 points in his last 11 games, five of those being goals.
  • On that Oshie goal, Alex Ovechkin became the highest scoring Russian player of all time (1,180 points), besting former Caps teammate Sergei Fedorov. This dude sets some kind of new historical record every time he steps on the ice at this point.
  • Braden Holtby stopped a Bo Horvat regulation penalty shot in this one and was excellent overall in his 30 save effort. Holts seems to be entering into a little groove here, which means only good things for the Caps winning chances.

  • The win over the Canucks moved the Caps fully ahead of the Penguins for second in the Metro. The Islanders still remain in the division lead with two more points than the Caps, with a game in hand.
  • Evgeny Kuznetsov and Michal Kempny took some more penalties to add to their eleven gajillion already this season. The whole team needs to be a lot more disciplined.
  • Love you, Beags.
