Alex Ovechkin was suspended for Friday night’s game against the Calgary Flames due to skipping the All-Star Game, but that doesn’t mean the Capitals captain didn’t stay busy.
Ovechkin presented the city of Washington DC with a championship ring encased in a plaque that included the team’s Stanley Cup photo on the ice at T-Mobile Arena.
Ovechkin presented the bling to a group of local firefighters from the DCFD Engine Co. 2. The Mayor’s Chief of Staff was also on hand for the ring presentation.

The Capitals posted several photos of the handoff. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis even received a special hat from the firefighters inspired by the Capitals logo.

“I’ve always believed nothing brings a city closer together than a winning sports team, so I am honored to once again celebrate the Caps historic Stanley Cup win with the City of Washington, DC,” Leonsis said.
The owner had more information on where the ring will be headed next on his blog.
The ring will then be transported by Engine Co. 2 during a ceremonial trip to City Hall where they will be put on display. The ring will arrive just in time for the Mayor’s annual Open House, which will be held at the historic John A. Wilson Building on February 4. The event will kick off the start of Mayor Bowser’s second term. This year, she became the first woman ever re-elected as the Mayor of Washington, DC and the first mayor to earn a second term in 16 years.
Mayor Bower thanked Leonsis in a tweet.
Thank you @TedLeonsis! We’ll have the ring on display at our Wilson Building (City Hall) open house this Monday 2/4 at 5PM. @E2R1DCFD will deliver the ring! RSVP: https://t.co/VXPJmIeqIc https://t.co/sCAdlRgL2d

The ring will then go on display at DC City Hall, hopefully, for the rest of time.
This is the second time Ovechkin has been involved with a ceremony that involved the mayor of DC. In June 2008, Ovechkin received a key to the city from Mayor Adrian Fenty.
Earlier in the day, the Sport Junkies also received championship rings from Leonsis.
