Ovation for Ovi on RMNB’s birthday: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals stomped all over the Detroit Red Wings in a quick stop home before they return to the road Friday night in Raleigh. The home team thoroughly entertained their red clad supporters on said stop, blowing out Detroit 6-2.

The Red Wings out-shot the Caps 37 to 25 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 55 to 45.

  • RMNB turned nine years old last night and Alex Ovechkin decided to celebrate the occasion with what he knows how to do best, score lots of goals. Ovi recorded his 21st career regular season hat trick, which ties him with Rick Martin and Glenn Anderson for 12th all time. He also has now surpassed Pavel Bure‘s 20 hat tricks to become the new leader in the category for any Russian born players. Hell, it was our birthday so lets make this an Ovi centric numbers post, any objections?
  • As you may have heard, Ovi is now also on a 12-game point scoring streak which is only one game short of his career high of 13 that he achieved in the 2006-07 season. In those 12 games this season, he has 13 goals and 6 assists.
  • With his 126th career multi-goal game, Ovi has now surpassed Dino Ciccarelli for the 11th most of those in the NHL’s history. Next up at 127 is Jaromir Jagr and Mike Bossy. You’ve probably heard of those guys before.

  • Did I mention that with his three goals last night, Alex Ovechkin has extended his current NHL goal lead to four by being the first to hit the 25 mark in the league this season. He also has at least one game in hand on eight of the ten goal scorers directly below him.
  • Not to mention that he is also doing all of this at the prime age of 33 years old. His 25 goals this season are tied for the most goals all time in a team’s first 30 games at age 33-or-older. The most goals ever scored by a 33-plus year old is 54 by Jagr in 2005-06. Aging like the finest wine you can find.
  • Oh yeah, and Nicklas Backstrom recorded four assists in a game for the 12th time in his career which has tied him for 8th all time in that category with Gilbert Perreault. His 12 games of that nature are tied with Mario Lemieux for the most over the last 25 seasons. Put him in the hall too and let them bring Braden Holtby.
