The New Jersey Devils thought Tom Wilson’s hit on Brett Seney was ‘senseless’

Following the Capitals 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils Friday night, the Caps defended Tom Wilson for his hit against Brett Seney.

The Devils voiced their displeasure with the hit. Seney had to undergo concussion protocol and thought he may have been clipped in the head.

“It was more kind of [the] back of my shoulder,” Seney said. “I don’t know if he was intending to do it or what. I haven’t had the chance to look at it yet.”

Coach John Hynes was curt in his post-game press conference and said “I thought the refs made the right call. I’m sure the league will take care of it.”

Captain Andy Greene tried to stay diplomatic, but concluded that the hit was “senseless.”

Devils color commentator Ken Daneyko noted after the game that “Tom Wilson just can’t make this play.”

He elaborated that while he didn’t think the play was malicious, the puck was gone and it wasn’t a hit worth making.

“He’s not gonna get the benefit of the doubt,” Daneyko said. “Some people say ‘well he’s targeted,’ that’s what they’re gonna say here in Washington. Maybe he is at times. But it’s warranted. He’s played real good hockey for them and it’s unfortunate. I don’t know what the outcome is going to be.”
