Earlier this week, former Capital Karl Alzner was put on waivers by the Montreal Canadiens.
After no NHL team claimed the 30-year-old defenseman, Alzner was assigned to AHL Laval Rocket.
And wouldn’t you know it, he scored in his first game!

Following up a rebound that bounced out to the far boards, Alzer fired a shot that beat Belleville Senators goaltender Filip Gustavsson.
Alzner didn’t have much of a celebration after scoring.

“I was shocked, honestly,” Alzner said after the game. “I don’t typically get those ones off too well. They’re kind of tough when they’re coming right at you, but I was just lucky I got a hold of it and it found the spot.
“That’s kind of what I needed to kind of to settle me in the game. It’s good to score a goal at any level.”

The game marked Alzner’s first AHL game since winning the Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears on June 14, 2010. And he scored a goal in that game too. So, despite an eight-and-a-half year gap, Alzner’s has goals in consecutive AHL games.
“There you go!” Alzner said laughing when learning of that fact. “Let’s keep it rolling then.”
Alzner said the AHL was “different” than he last remembered it with Hershey, pointing out that Laval played a higher-pace game, similiar to the NHL club. With Hershey, “we tried to control the puck the entire game and not let anyone touch it.”
Despite the awkwardness of no longer being an NHL player, Alzner has taken his demotion in stride.
“I’m always in a good mood,” he said before the game. “It doesn’t matter what’s going on. You’re almost always going to get a smile out of me.”
Alzner is in the second season of a five-year, $23.125 million contract. Once the sixth highest-paid player on Montreal, Alzner now is the highest paid player in the AHL.

Alzner only played in eight games in the NHL this season before being waived.
