Capitals celebrate Thanksgiving with kids in costumes, turkey bowling, and pie-eating contest

The Capitals’ Thanksgiving Eve game gave us something we can all be grateful for: the Mites on Ice in turkey costumes.

During the first intermission, local area youth hockey players took the ice and proved that turkeys really can fly, even with giant costumes weighing them down.

Each player had numbers taped on their tail-feathers. The costumes don’t look that aerodynamic, but they didn’t seem to slow these kiddos down!

So cute. Argh. Turkey for dinner is canceled.

Sadly, now that Tarik El-Bashir has moved to the Athletic to cover the DC football team, he wasn’t available to referee, and Slapshot seemed more interested in eating the turkeys than refereeing them.

It’s understandable, as he is a bird of prey, but it’s not quite in the spirit of the game.

When he wasn’t chasing small children with cutlery, Slapshot participated in the traditional Thanksgiving ritual of turkey-bowling on ice.

There was also a pie eating contest for fans, which we would very much like to participate in next time please (as long as there’s pumpkin available).
