Two goals in two seconds: Montreal Canadiens break 83-year-old NHL record against Capitals

The Washington Capitals were on the wrong side of history Thursday night.

The Montreal Canadiens scored two goals in two seconds against the Caps, breaking an NHL record originally set 83 years ago by the St. Louis Eagles.

Max Domi’s goal

The first record-breaking goal was a heartbreaker for Washington. Max Domi skated the puck down the wing and ripped a shot off Braden Holtby’s glove and into the net.

The tally gave the Canadiens a 5-4 lead with 22 seconds left. The Caps pulled Holtby for an extra man.

Joel Armia’s goal

Two seconds later, Nicklas Backstrom won the faceoff, but Canadiens forward Joel Armia stepped in front of Lars Eller and scored the empty-net goal.

That tally gave the Canadiens two goals in two seconds – the fastest two goals scored in NHL history. The Canadiens would go on to win 6-4.

According to TSN’s SportsCenter, the previous record was three seconds originally set by the St. Louis Eagles on Mar 12, 1935 against the Detroit Red Wings. Frank Jerwa and Joe Lamb scored in three seconds. The record was then tied 69 years later by the Wild on Jan 21, 2004 versus the Chicago Blackhawks after Jim Dowd and Richard Park scored in succession. The New York Islanders also scored two goals in three seconds in a November 30, 2016 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins (Anders Lee, Nikolai Kulemin).
